Ok, guys. This is something I discovered through another blogger friend of mine (Mama Jotes, I’m talking to YOU!) –and I’m absolutely in love with it. I’ve been making my own household cleaners for a while now, for a multitude of reasons (In short, I don’t like toxic chemicals in my home or on my body and I’m a big fan of saving the planet.), but I had yet to find a bathroom cleaner that REALLY worked for things like tubs, tile, and sinks. Enter this magic recipe. I tried it and it’s amazing for several reasons:
- MAN ALIVE does it clean well!
- It’s super easy to make
- It’s a great activity to do with the kids because not only is throwing stuff in a bowl and mixing it up fun, but since all the ingredients are natural and safe, it’s completely safe if some of it gets on their skin!
- Since it’s safe for it to get on your skin, guess what else? Your kids can actually help you clean! One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is practical life skills like this.
- The ingredients are very inexpensive
- Did I mention that the ingredients are all-natural and non-toxic and biodegradable?
- I can reuse old containers instead of throwing them away or recycling them. And you guys know–reusing products is the easiest, cheapest, most efficient way to reduce your carbon footprint.
- I don’t have to buy cleaners from the store that are bursting with harmful chemicals and fillers. That means I’m using less plastic throw-away bottles, AND since I can make my own products with minimal time, money and effort, it’s cheaper.
- I never have to run to the store because I’m out of single-purpose cleaning supplies.
This recipe is actually from Lisa Bronner (the granddaughter of Dr. E. Bronner–the guy whose name is on the castile soap found in most stores). Again, THIS ISN’T MY RECIPE. Here is the link to the original post. But, I’m going to list the ingredients and how-to here for your convenience. A huge thank you to Lisa for her website and the info on it. (This isn’t a sponsored post–I just want to make sure I give credit where credit is due.)
I personally think this is best stored in a glass jar, because it’s a bit thick to use in a squirt bottle. I just used a metal spoon and put dollops of the mixture on the surfaces to be cleaned. A word of caution, though. This is a SUPER SUDSY mix once you start scrubbing, especially if your water is soft or you have a water softener. So be judicious with use. You can always add more if needed as you go. Happy cleaning!
