Whether it’s yelling at their kids less, losing the unwanted weight, earning more money, landing that dream job, being more present for their family, improving life balance, or crossing a dream vacation off their bucket list, what holds most people back from achieving their goals isn’t negative thoughts, a lack of education, or even resources. What holds them back is something much less obvious. It’s something that can torpedo the hardest work and the best of intentions and the purest of motivations.
It’s an imbalance in the belief system.
Generally, people subconsciously and unquestioningly allow themselves to wholly believe the negative thoughts that we all have running around inside our heads:
“My kids never listen to me, no matter if I ask nicely or not.”
“I can never lose the weight.”
“Earning money is hard.”
“I always get passed over for promotions, even though I’m the one doing the work.”
“I can’t wake up in the mornings early enough to have the morning routine I want.”
“Italy is for when I retire.”)
But when it comes to believing that these goals and dreams are not only possible, but inevitable to achieve…we fall short.
We believe the negative, limiting thoughts without even knowing it, and we instead question the validity, probability, feasibility, or even possibility of having what we want.
This leads us to make decisions that set us up for at best creating more of the same experiences we’re already living…at worst, they drive our motivation and ability to break free from the cycle into the trenches.
If you don’t actually believe you CAN wake up early enough to have a morning routine, why would you put your phone away and go to bed at a reasonable hour the night before? How can you ever be motivated to wake up with the alarm clock instead of hitting the snooze button? How likely are you to want to actually get out of bed?
Belief in your goals is the only thing that’s stopping you from taking action that’s actually going to get you to where you want to be.
Without belief, your dreams will remain only realized when asleep.
And it’s the thing that can inspire you forward and guide you on your path to living your life as you want to live it.
Lean into beliefs that inspire possibility, progress, growth, and joy. When you do, you start making decisions differently. And once that happens, life starts to hand you what you want, and so much more.
What stories and thoughts are you believing about your life that are keeping your belief system imbalanced? What are things you can do to counter that?
